My broody had "duds" under her, eight of them. I left 3 in thinking they might be fertile and also to keep her sitting as the feedstore just got in some golden laced wyandottes. I knew she would sit forever if I didn't get her something so Fri. night she got 5 of the wyandottes and 1 barred rock. They are tiny! She is accepting them like her own, thank goodness and when I checked those last 3 eggs she had under her, they were not fertile either so don't feel so bad removing them for the live chicks. She is happy as can be now with her little flock. I would have loved to hatch her's but I'm loving it that I've got some golden laced now! Chicken TV time. Nothing like watching your babies! Sharon

I have a new broody due to hatch around March 9th. She has only been sitting for about a week. I tried giving her some additional eggs about 3 days into the sit, but she tossed them out. Last count I had was around 9 eggs after she disposed of the two extra.

I am not even going to candle, as I wouldn't be able to replace any duds right now anyway, so I am letting her do her thing and I'm not going to interfere.

I'm going to leave her alone and let her pull it off the old-fashioned way.....and surprise me! I don't even know how many she has under her now, as I think she laid some of her own in the original clutch of eggs.

Isn't this the best?

I have a broody hen that I put fertile eggs under today. THis is my first time doing this, but the gal I got her from said she was a good mama. Now my question is...even though I have only three other hens in the coop(plus I added additional nest boxes since broody mama is hogging the nest) do I still need to separate her? WIll my others bother her? She seems quite content right where she is...I don't want to mess with her if she will be fine where she is....please help me figure out the confusion! UGH! I really want her to be successful.

Let me add that as I put each egg in front of her, she eagerly accepted it and tucked it under her. She seems quite happy with the 10 eggs, yes 10. They are bantam sized. She is a bantam cochin.

This is my first time too and although I didn't, I'd suggest you mark the eggs. Mine is in the coop with the rest and I swear the others are laying in the same box. Every day I go out there and there are MORE eggs. I haven't marked any but I wish I would have.
