Broodies on eggs? Broodies with babies? Post here.

How do you care for recovering broodies? I have a new mama who has long nails and her feet look a bit rough. She loves being a mama, but I know it has been hard on her. Should I give her some spa treatment? A foot soak? Do I just wait until she's done being a mother? Is there anything you do to help your gils recover?

I trimmed my broody hen's nails last year. She'd been broody for 4 out of 6 months and her nails looked horrible. They almost look deformed/twisted, but after I trimmed her nails they were almost back to normal.

This is more fun than hatching my own.

Well, almost!!!

I came home to 5 new babies, to add to the 6 that hatched yesterday, and just moved 26 to the hatcher!!!

Then, we're taking a break. ('cept for the 2 broodies on eggs!)

Congrats, you guys. And thanks, Catalina, for the pics and blog.

Chickens are chickens and usually hatch within roughly the same range with some minor exceptions. Some will hatch slightly early others late. Difference in time and temp and humidity are usually other species (guineas, turkeys, quail) not breeds.

I have a broody hen that I wasn't sure what to do with. I finally decided that I may as well try and get some eggs to put under her (we aren't allowed roosters so I don't have any fertile eggs). Should be fun to watch a mama with baby chicks. All our other chicks have been from feed stores or local people. So I am getting some eggs tomorrow! I've never had eggs hatch either under a broody or in an incubator so I have no idea what if anything I need to do, so it should be interesting!
