Broodies on eggs? Broodies with babies? Post here.

Here's how I nearly lost two chicks:

In the a.m. the chicks were stuck to the broody's chest feathers. One had some goo from an egg and the hen's feathers were wrapped around the chicks neck, tight, and the hen had pecked the chick in the shoulder area making a big hole. I had to cut the chick away from the hen with scissors. The chick survived and is well.

Another chick I found in the a.m. stuck to another broody hen's chest, attached to her by poop, and she was pacing back and forth clucking and the chick was peeping so loud it woke me up out of a dead sleep in a room on the other side of the house where I had an air purifyer running. Luckily I was able to cut the chick away with scissors.

I think both of these chicks may have perished, the first one for sure, had I not intervened.

Just something to be aware of.

I am so glad I have a broody, though. An incubator, that I was in charge of, would make me a crazy person real fast. I have been reading some of the threads of those with eggs in a bator. They are losing sleep, pacing the floors, and have their noses stuck to the bator windows. That would be me!!!
Maybe some of you can relate, cause I know some of you also have bators going.
Isn't the broody much easier!!!! I think I will disallow myself from ever getting a bator. I will just keep my Penny around. She is such a good girl!!

Day 20 here just checked under my broody...No pips-No Chicks-No zipping...Yet...Again these eggs could be delayed a day or two...So I am not giving up on these eggs...Untill I know there is no possible life in them at all.

FarmerKitty even hatched some in an electric frying pan and some use a crockpot. Personally, my nerves would be even more shot than they are with an incubator! My broody just jumped off the nest to gobble up some scratch. At least I know she's eating a little.

Teresaann24 - good luck with your babies!!! I think 3/1 is my day.

I'm really worried my eggs wont be hatching tomorrow...I waited the whole 21 days last time for noting to hatch...I am just so worried none are going to hatch again..I'm afraid the eggs may be delayed which is gonne drive me up the wall waiting even longer...I had them on an heating pad for 3 days before placing them under my broody. Temps were to high and hum was also so once the lone egg died on day 22 I placed these eggs under her out of 10 eggs only 4 had developed till day 18 when I candled last.

If they do not hatch tomorrow on day 22 should I candle?

I have a silkie that went broody about 3 weeks ago. I couldn't get her to stop, so I said, what the heck, I'll set some eggs under her. So I set some eggs under her about 3 days ago.

She then started to lay her own eggs along with them.

My question is, how far apart do I permit the eggs to be? If she continues to add to the clutch of eggs, how can I mark the current ones safely so I can remove any of the new ones she adds?

I checked on her this morning ... she is still sitting strong.. she doesnt even really eat much.. she wont get off the nest unless it floods or I push her off.. *make her take a break* bring feeling back into those little leggs. LOL.. I only did it one time.. for those of you that leave your broodies alone.. her comb and waddles are getting so much smaller.. but they are still red..
