Here's how I nearly lost two chicks:
In the a.m. the chicks were stuck to the broody's chest feathers. One had some goo from an egg and the hen's feathers were wrapped around the chicks neck, tight, and the hen had pecked the chick in the shoulder area making a big hole. I had to cut the chick away from the hen with scissors. The chick survived and is well.
Another chick I found in the a.m. stuck to another broody hen's chest, attached to her by poop, and she was pacing back and forth clucking and the chick was peeping so loud it woke me up out of a dead sleep in a room on the other side of the house where I had an air purifyer running. Luckily I was able to cut the chick away with scissors.
I think both of these chicks may have perished, the first one for sure, had I not intervened.
Just something to be aware of.
