Broodies on eggs? Broodies with babies? Post here.

I loved the pictures of the previous broodies and their chicks!!

I have a first-time broody and after trying to seperate her from the others, she just wasn't having it! I know I need to b/c her egg count keeps going higher and higher!!

I haven't seen any other ones in her nest either. But the last time I checked on her to see if she took the switched eggs I gave her, she had two more eggs!

Yesterday I only got one duck egg, so she could possibly have 10-12 chicken eggs in there now, I only gave her the 5. She must not be taking anymore orders because the other hens are back to laying in the main nest box today. LOL

I hope she takes the move okay. I don't even know where I should put her.

Good luck with your hatch! Don't forget pics too.

Here is my girl little gurl sitting on 3 turkey eggs. (All that could fit under her) She is 10 months old and this is her 1st time she has been sitting for 7 days now.

wow i just was looking through pages of broody hens and i came across this thread.

come on lets here about the broodies of 2010!!!!!!!!!

I didn't know silkies could brood turkey eggs... huh, ya' learn something new every day!
Anywho, my silkie brooded 14 eggs, none hatched and now i have 3 white leghorns for her. If dad will ever send my the pictures i took on his phone, i will put them up. but she takes care of them, loves them, *ra-ra-ra-rawcks* at me when i pick them up. ect. its so cute.

Well I will chime in for 2010--my moving of my broody went horrible wrong. She went off the nest and the eggs were cold in the morning. They might have developed anyhow but I was ticked so I broke them all up and the hens had a feast. The broody went back to the old place she had eggs. I guess it is more the location for some.
My boxes are off the ground 2' and 3' and I have let them hatch in there in the past. The biggest problem that I have is the hen getting off the nest with the first chick and letting the rest of the eggs die. In September I had a broody that did this. I cracked the rest of the eggs and there were 4 or 5 chicks still alive but not nearly ready to hatch (made me ill) and several that had died, one infertile. It seems as though if they are not separated that is what you get; staggered hatching. I just wish I had had an incubator to put the rest of the eggs in to give them a chance.
Sp now I am waiting a bit and will set her with more eggs. I am hoping that some chicken will take the nest in the cage as her nest; then I will not have to move her at all. Someone else said that they have movable nests so when a hen is broody they can just pick up the whole thing. hen and all, and pout it in a cage. Methinks that might be a good idea!

This is my second broody and she is doing wonderful. Her eggs will hatch 3-19 if I remember right. I tried moving her before I gave her some eggs but she wasnt having it, so I put her back.

She gets off her nest once a day to eat, poop, and do what she needs to do all within about 15 minutes. Then she is back on her nest.
she is taking such good care of her eggs (7 of them).

I will probably move them, if they need it after they hatch. I dont think she will have a problem protecting her chicks though.

This is her, meet Ms. Basil Blue....

On a side note... My first broody did terrible, she ended up eating and breaking all her eggs. She was aweful! So Im so excited for this broody because she is very careful. Ive watched her stand up and rotate her eggs, too cute!
