I left 5 eggs in the nest for a week and today one of my Buff Orp's has been sitting there for 12 hours so far. I want to let my kids see a hen hatch some eggs. Papa is a Dark Brahma. There could be Light, Buff, Dark, Brahma chicks, Brama/Orpingtons, Brahma/RIR's. He's dedicated to all 12 of his hens lol.

1) Are the eggs still good after sitting in the coop that long?

2) Does that description sound like she is wanting to hatch the eggs?

3) If she is broody should I move her? She is in the main nesting box. If I move her will she still sit on the eggs or is she "honed in to a set location?

Thanks,

Ed

It all depends on how hot your coop has gotten.

Before you move her let her sit for couple days to know for sure sometimes if you move them they will stop being broody at least some of my hens have.

It's been 59 at night and 80 here for the last week. The coop door is always open to the outside atmosphere and there are vented soffits. I want to say it's never been cooler. It did get to 96 one afternoon.

I moved her tonight to the unused nest box and she tucked all the eggs underneath of her and has settled in for the night.

There are 11 other hens laying. Would it be better if I swapped out her 5 week old eggs and gave her some out of the fridge? I could just swap out her eggs for the eggs that get laid tomorrow.

Which would be better?

Five week old eggs are no longer fertile. Try to give her eggs that have not been refrigerated. Refrigeration lessens the viability of an egg. Starting the eggs off at the same time is a good thing to avoid a staggered hatch.

The eggs are 1 week old and there are 5 of them.

I think I'll just giver here tomorrows clutch from the other hens.

Edit 6/19:

I took away her eggs and gave her 5 new eggs from today. The eggs she had would have been fine I think. After only 1 day each egg had what looked like a single red vein/artery inside.

Oh well, she only lost 1 day.
I've advertised chicks to all my friends and ifthe response is good I'll slip some more of todays eggs under her.
