I bought 8 silky chicks today and would like to put them in the coop. I live in the desert in texas and the current temps are running hi 80s to low 90s in the daytime and mid 60s at night. Will they do well outside? Thanks for any help or suggestions. Jim

Welcome to BYC!

Congrats on the new chicks! While they might do well during the day with your high temps, your night time temps are too cold. Chicks need constant high temps until they grow enough to control their internal temps. You will need add a heat lamp at night and try to keep the temp up in the upper 80s for week old chicks.

Here is an article on raising chicks that may help you out...

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. Enjoy your new chicks and welcome to BYC!

Welcome to BYC. Depending upon the age and size of the chicks, they will probably need a supplemental heat source while adapting to their new environment.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good advice above, good luck with the chicks!

hi guys, i am doing an Agriculture Assignment and one of the questions asks for a description of the term brooding chicks

Also asks for the correct temperature for brooding chick
Would you guys be able to help me out?

When you are able to put the silkies outside PLEASE make sure they have loads of shade, they do not handle high heat and humidity well. They needs lots of cold, fresh water, and probably a fan in the coop to keep air circulating. Moving air feels cooler. You may need to use misting hoses to cool air near them and even swallow pans of water they can cool their feet in.

You may want to post on your state thread to see what others do . In some hot areas of the country they have two solid walls for a coop and two walls that are entirely hardware cloth to let air pass through. Chickens usually are much better at handling cold, than heat.
