brooding off the grid

I know this thread is old, but I thought I would add my 2 cents. I am off grid and brooding chicks in their coop with a kerosene lantern. I have a thermometer next to the lantern and it says the temp there stays around 35C. I'm in northern Canada and we are still getting frost, but the temp doesn't drop too low (about 25C) next to their lantern. They are a bit chilly at night, I admit, but between snuggling together and the lantern, they have managed. I have 11 orpingtons and 1 Chantecler in the coop right now. The lantern is a 12" kerosene and when filled will burn for approximately 12 hours. The coop is well ventilated, so the fumes haven't been an issue.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of us off grid people on here so figured I'd bump this up again and share what we are doing here. We have chicks in here using a wool hen. So far it's going well although I am tucking hand warmers inside the "hen" at night because our temps are a little cool with rainy weather. We also just added a couple more chicks and they are tiny and not used to this so we're easing them in. Good luck all.
