I watched a dvd recently about brooding chickens and there was a segment on allowing a mother hen to brood the chicks and then raise them. I was just come the mother hen lets her chicks out in the grass (presumeably not in 90 degree weather, which is what it would be in week 2 in a brooder) and the chicks are just fine? I'm not looking to buck the traditional brooding guidelines. I'm just wondering why its different?

Because as soon as the chicks get cold, they start peeping and she herds them back up to sit on.
