One of my girls Fiffie went broody last year in December and she hatched 3 chicks, she looked after them until they were 3 months old and then motled and started laying eggs again only about 1 month ago, now she is broody again Ahhh So this morning I went down to the coop and put her out of the nest and shut the coop for a while. I only have one other hen that is laying at the moment, the other one has chicks. My question is Do you think this method will work? I plan to open the coop again in a couple of hours for Dipsy to lay(she didn't lay until late yesterday so I'm thinking I have all day to keep the coop closed till she needs to use the nesting box.) The food is not in the coop so they can all get food and water when they want it. Do you think this may break her broody cycle? After I put her out of the coop and closed it she kept walking around the coop trying to find a way In.

You might need to put her in a wire bottom cage with just food/water in it and no nesting material. It works best if the cage is off the ground so that she has air flow under her to cool her down and usually works in just a few days. If she's really determined closing off the nest boxes will just force her to "find" another place to brood.

ok I set her up inside in the only largish cage I have, Do you think this will do?

That should work. Mine are a bit bigger, but I have old rabbit cages handy. She's not gonna be happy, but it should only take a few days and is better for her then letting her sit on a nest for a month or more not eating properly and with no hope of hatching chicks. Be strong mom.

Well I'm suprised, she's already broken(I THINK) I took her back down to the yard this morning, she ran around and said hello to everyone and then started scratching around and had a drink, I sat down in yard for about half an hour and she hadn't gone back to the nesting box yet, so far so good. I'm thinking maybe because I jumped on her broodines early she wasn't as determined, she'd only been broody for about a day, I haven't put the cage away yet just incase she's tricking me lol I plan to check her every hour or so to see what she is up too.
New2chooks she gave me filthy looks all night till I went to bed, we put her in the dining room and she was well behaved all night except for knocking over the water and food about 3 times and trying to stare me down lol I hope she is back to her non broody self, She is a Buff cochin/ silkie ( I think, because she has 5 toes on one foot and a small walnut comb)and I read on here that they can be really stuborn when they go broody and hard to break.
