One of our Wyandottes, Daisy, went broody on use about a month before Easter. We "borrowed" some duck eggs which she sat on. 4 hatched, one hadn't formed at all and the other didn't survive the hatching. They hatched around Easter weekend. All other chickens were lovely with the ducklings and they're now back home with the other ducks at the farm.
Daisy has now spent the last two days mostly sitting on the nest - without an egg there at some points and I think she's making the same purring noises she made before.
Would she really be broody again? It's not a problem as we can "borrow" more eggs for her to sit on but will she have fattened up enough again as she got pretty scrawny last time around?

Sorry - a fairly new chicken owner so not experienced this before!

Thanks in advance

Sarah

Hey, Daisy could be broody again! I f you think she is too thin or whatsoever then you must take her out of her nest and put her in a smaller cage ( I use a rabbit cage with mesh flooring) where there is nothing for her to sit on but you must give her food and water (obviously) and then leave her in there for a few days (2-3) until she has stopped puffing up and purri9ng.

I once had a hen who went broody on a batch of eggs and when they all hatched the brood was eaten by a hawk. So then this hen went and found another nest to sit on. The nest she had chosen didn't have fertilized eggs in it and I took her off! She then again found another nest which luckily had fertilized eggs! All of the eggs hatched! She was very thin but gained her weight very quickly!

I try to breed my chickens naturally and so leave them alone to do what they want! So my hens go broody when ever they want to!
I hope this helped!!!

Thank you! Yes, it has helped. She's definitely fatter than she was when the ducklings hatched but I need her next to her sister to compare her weight. I'm guessing it must have been 5 weeks ago now and they get enough treats as well as layers/corn so I would think she's ok.
I'll give her a day and see if she's out of the coop much before deciding about eggs.

Thanks again
