This is my first time with a broody, she has done well and two eggs hatched yesterday. Last night a silkie egg pipped, this morning it had large pieces of the egg shell missing in the center if the egg but no zipping at all. The chick was moving and chirping loudly. Then the broody started pecking the egg shell away

Until it got to this point, then she rolled the egg over and the chick fell out of the shell.
There was no blood and no remaining yoke but there is a sore on her navel

I put a small amount of tea tree oil on it, is there anything else I should do? Will this chick be ok?
Was momma trying to help this one hatch or what was she doing?

In my experience, if the chick does not push itself out of the shell (ie falls out or is pulled out) they never develop the proper leg strength. I do not believe mama hen was trying to help so much as she was being curious. It looks as though the navel is not quite "finished" if you will. Usually only time will tell with this sort of thing. If you see that the navel is bleeding then you may want to remove the chick and place it in a separate area so it does not get pecked at by the other babies or mama hen. Also, risk of infection can cause problems so you can always try dabbing the navel area with iodine (or stick with your tea tree oil method). Good luck and I hope it all works out!
