Broody breaker 101

I went even farther and wired the 2x4 to the crate walls a few inches off the ground, so that it really looks like a roost. I recently used the crate for my injured hen and it took her a whole WEEK to even notice she had a roost in there! Once she found it, she roosted on it every night, but had to sleep on the floor for a week first. Chickens are so adorably dumb sometimes.
If I raised the 'roost' off the ground in my small wire crate, it would greatly reduce the floor space and her ability to move around.

To clear up any confusion, this is a dog crate.

This is a pet carrier.

A pet carrier would not work.
I just call them wire or plastic crates. :D

My Buff Orps are the worst! Sometimes it takes several days in broody jail. I use a chickshaw type coop with narrow wooden slats to sit/walk on above the wire bottom. Nothing in there to make a nest with. Just food and water.

I just put mine in a wire Dog crate or pen, on the ground, for about a week, with one of my extra roosters and that usually does the trick. I have one in a pen, now. I just had to put hay in it and cover it with heavy-duty plastic during our last cold blast, her in the Texas Hill Country but it worked out fine. She be ready to be put back in with the rest of the group, soon. 😊

It worked. She did great. Thank you everyone for the amazing advice. I placed her in a medium sized dog crate. Made sure the crate was elevated from the ground with several bricks. I then placed a roost, food, water and oyster shell. After about 3-4 days she was out of her broody trance. It took her a few days after to lay eggs. But now she is back to laying a lovely egg a day for me. She is my little angel.
