Buff has been setting for a week and one of the eggs broke, so the others are a mess now. Should I wash them with warm water so the shell can breath? Or is that not a concern?

Can you post a pic of them? It depends on how much is on them. Are the hen's nails too long? That is usually what breaks the eggs.Buff has been setting for a week and one of the eggs broke, so the others are a mess now. Should I wash them with warm water so the shell can breath? You would just use a dog or cat nail clipped on them. Don't hit the quick though. I don't know if that would disrupt her enough to make her abandon the eggs or not though. Remove both of the cracked ones. I would put fresh hay or shavings down, and just leave the eggs as they are. @aart can you help with the nail situation?Just checked them and another one is cracked. Had no idea about checking a hens nails. Idk how long they are. How do I address that?
I think this is good point. It depends on how much is on them.

Really don't know if washing them would be a good idea,
but wiping off as much as possible without using any water.
Definitely change out any dirty bedding.
Not sure how they got broken...shell might have been thin?
Candle the rest for cracks?
Cool, thank you.I have had similar situations in the past. Most often it's when I have been collecting eggs for the incubator and some eggs that got nasty from a broken egg in a nest box. I washed the eggs and put them in the incubator and they have hatch out fine. I do mark the eggs. Good luck and have fun...
Incubator different than a broody tho. Most often it's when I have been collecting eggs for the incubator and some eggs that got nasty from a broken egg in a nest box.
