In the Brooder
Hi all,
Well it happened, we have our first broody pullet. She's about 10 months at this point and just started noticing her sitting in the nest box and getting all fluffed up when I take her out. Tried to do some research on here and online in general and seems like the wire cage is best. We have 6 birds and the coop is smallish, too small for me to put the wire dog crate in. What we've been doing for a day or so it taking her out of the coop in the morning and putting her in the raised cage in the run all day so the other birds can lay. At night we are blocking off the nest boxes and allowing her to roost with the flock.
So here's my question. Is this bad? Will it take longer to break her? We can't really leave her in the cage 24/7 because she'd have to be outside(in an enclosed run, but outside). In VT its still getting down to the 30's-low 40's at night. Should I also be separating her inside the coop as well? We don't really have a small cage, but we have a large cat carrier, but it doesn't have an open bottom, which I'm told is essential. Any advice?
