We have a hen that refuses to get out of her nest box. I know that she is just being broody - but it has been going on for over a month now and I am starting to loose faith that her behavior will pass. Furthermore, she has messed up the "egg-laying mojo" of my group of girls. Our egg production has been cut in half since she has become broody. I am relatively new to raising hens and the internet gives you a variety of solutions ranging from putting your hen into water to placing her in a wire cage. The hen in the water solution did NOT work and she immediately back into the nest box - even after several "baths".

So - any suggestions are welcome. I need to get Myrtle out of the nest box and acting like the rest of the girls.

Help!

Remove her from the nesting box and put her in the run. Keep taking her off the nest, and if possible, lock her out of the nesting box. (Lock her in the run or just shut the coop door). Hope she returns to her normal self soon.

If you have a little pet carrier, remove her from your nest box---and put her in the pet carrier. IF she isn't moving off the nest, this will be no big problem for her---and will free up your coop for your other chickens to re-establish their laying routine.

Give her a little more time and encouragement--- hormones are pretty strong in chickens. Hopefully she is still eating, drinking etc. She should be just about ready to realize that she won't have a hatch.

good luck.
