Broody chicken

I understand the broodiness in a hen but I have one question about it. Will a hen ever get broddy if the eggs are not fertilized? Meaning if you have no rooster present how do they know to become brody or not?

A hen can and will become broody rooster or not! It is just there instinct. Stronger in some than in others.
