Broody Ditched Eggs During Hatch

I put broody and the nest in the laundry room. No more skipping off for her for the next few days. She's peeved but hunkered down on the eggs properly now. Not ideal but I can't lock her in the coop due to extreme heat and the fact that she has a charming habit of screaming at the top of her lungs when confined in there (thanks housemates for teaching her that).

As for the chick, I put him in the incubator with high humidity. I'll check on him a little later but he will probably require an assisted hatch due to the size of the hole. He can't reach the shell to peck on it - just waiting for the blood vessels to shrink so I don't accidentally nick him (more). Usually if you can free the head and/or a foot they do the rest on their own, so I'm going to work towards that.

Thanks for responding! We'll see how it goes. You might get some bonus quail chick pics, since they seem to be hatching normally and should be out tomorrow morning.

Update: the little dude was definitely not ready to hatch yet. I extracted him around midnight when he started struggling and peeping to get out. It was a lot harder than expected due to the dried blood obscuring things and when I got him out he was still absorbing the tail end of an egg sack. He's in the incubator recovering and absorbing the rest of the yolk. No signs of wryneck or foot/leg problems (part of why I'm reluctant to assist is they often seem to come out with problems and I end up euthanising anyway). If all goes well, I will offer him back to the hen when the other chicks hatch - she was glued to the nest this morning when I offered her a chance to go out. I'll offer again later but I suspect the eggs are probably hatching now properly and she's reluctant to leave.

Quail started hatching around 6am. 9 of the little guys so far. They should all be out by the end of the day! The chick size difference is huge even though the chicken chick is a small bantam.

Recovered and ready to go! He has no legs 😅 should've seen that coming with the cross but they're so ridiculous

Mom & baby are doing fine. I did take the eggs and put them in the incubator so she could poop and tend baby. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what day they are on (I THINK day 22), so I candled them and put the 3 good ones in. Hopefully they pip tonight and hatch tomorrow. Fingers crossed, don't want a lone baby, even if mom is raising him.

Well the other eggs didn't hatch. Will chickie be OK as a singleton? I don't really want to buy some chicks from tsc - I just got rid of the roosters from the last time I did that 😅

I've had broodies raise only one chick before. They do fine. It is better, and recommended, that there's more than just one chick, but I've only had one chick in a hatch before, and she did fine.
