Broody duck breeds? Muscovy, Khaki, Cayuga?

So, sounds like I should get a muscovy?

RAREROO,
I see you are from Alapaha, Ga. I've never been there but I have been raising Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldogs since 1998. I currenlty have a brother and sister from my last breeding in 2003. I don't know if you are familiar with the breed at all, for some reason I just thought it was something to mention.

Wow, how did I not know about them ? I have never heard of them at all so I just looked them up and yes, they are named from the Alapaha River region of. South Ga which is exactly where I am, the. Alapaha river is the land line of the back of our property. From what little I just read about them, is said the guy, Mr. Lane who developed them was from Rebecca, which is a couple towns over, but still, you would think that since they were named after Alapaha that I would have heard them mentioned in this small town at some point, but I had no idea. That's really interesting to know though and now I totally want one. They kinda look like Pits a little and I love Pit bulls. Thanks for telling me about them.

And yes, a muscovy would probably be your best bet. They are well known broodies and not loud like other domestic breeds of female ducks.... and yes, a duck is also the technical term for the females but I always call them female ducks it duck hens to avoid confusion with it being the general term, unless I'm specifying. " a drake and a duck", there you can tell I'm refering to a female.

I've always been happy with my dogs. Being right in the spot of this breeds creation you can probably find some old foundation lines. Probably much better than the watered down lines we have here in California. Not that there is anything 'wrong' with the dogs here, I just question the purity of their lineage.

In my experience Muscovy ducks are stellar mothers. They not only sit faithfully but then take excellent care afterward. I have a hen now that is still mothering her entire flock of 15 and they are all bigger than she is. The khaki however do not seem so thrilled on mothering. I had one that would not sit enough to hatch hers and another that after her 8 hatched she spent her time leading them around corners and running away and repeating that every time they found her.
