I have my first broody clutch scheduled to hatch this Friday, I guess. Friday evening will be Day 21.

My question (really worry) is about vaccinating the chicks. I know that hatcheries vaccinate “day old” chicks for Mareks. I have four eggs under her and would guess it could possibly take them through Saturday to hatch. Is Saturday or Sunday too late to vaccinate a chick that might possibly be 1 or 2 days old?

Thank y’all.

I believe it will be irrelevant unless you take them BEFORE they hatch and don't return them until 2-3 weeks after vaccination is the quarantine time required for it to become effective.

Personally Marek's vaccinated birds NOT welcome here... as it just hides the disease and reduces symptoms not actually prevent them from getting it.

Do you have a Marek's diagnosis in your flock... or just a little worried in a general?

If you are gonna hatch on a regular basis.. I personally would suggest breeding for resistance.. If more people did... maybe Marek's would be less prolific. One gene has been identified that DOES give resistance.

Happy hatching! :fl:jumpy:jumpy

Thanks much for the entirely new perspective. This is precisely what I didn’t know and very much needed to know.

I do not have Mareks in my flock and just thought it was something I needed to safeguard against. My first four chicks did not have any vaccinations, but my second batch of 26 were vaccinated; however, they were also kept inside the new coop in a brooder until being introduced to the originals at 5 weeks old.

I wasn’t aware that I could be possibly making things worse by vaccinating them. This is so good to know and leaves me $80 richer since I won’t be purchasing two vials of the vaccine for the two separate hatches.

Thank you, thank you. :celebrate

Can i just add my 2 cents worth?
As far as vaccinating, that's your call of course.
Eggcited4life is correct about the whole mareks issue, and breeding for resistance.
I vaccinate for Fowl Pox in my flock. I am in the hot, humid, and mosquito infested state of Texas.
I got very tired of paying more for shipping this vaccine than the actual vaccine, so I started researching how to split it, considering it's made for vaccinating 1,000 birds.
It is possible, if done correctly.
Just be aware if you do decide to vaccinate for anything, search BYC for this topic.

Good info there. I had never thought about splitting the vaccine. I do and still will vaccinate for fowl pox.
