I have a broody wyandotte, she's 18 months old, this is the 2nd time she's gone broody but I haven't tried to hatch eggs with her before, she's been sitting on 4 of her own infertile eggs for 4 days. I added 6 shipped fertile eggs when she came out to eat yesterday. When she went back in she knocked them all over the place then got into a different next box. I thought if I left them she might go back but 4 hours later I checked and she had broken one (her own) egg and was still sitting in the other empty nest box. I've removed the shipped eggs and put them in an incubator. She's clearly still broody and I am expecting another 6 shipped eggs early next week. What is the best way to introduce eggs to a broody and why would she break eggs she'd been sitting on. I wonder if I've upset her by messing with them. Can chickens tell which are not their own eggs?
I also have 6 chicks which are now 4 days old from my first successful incubator hatch, I wondered about introducing them to her instead of keeping them in the brooder but I am afraid she might hurt them or reject them. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hmmmm.....don't have an answer for you, but will be watching this post. I had the same thing happen to me.

Broodies can get particular... sometimes they know when an egg is not developing and will kick it out. weird I know.

My first time introducing chicks to broody will be Monday night, have a broody sexlink,I was told and have read many things on this and allways do things at night.

I Kept the eggs in the bator for 6 days then candled and 3 were developing so I slipped them under her that night, she's now a happy mummy with 3 babies.
