My show girl chicken is currently hatching a batch of chicks. I live in Michigan and fall is officially here. This week is the first it's actually chilled down the temperature is looking a little rough for the babes. I know its said its best to leave the chicks with their mom as they are capable of ensuring the chicks are the correct temperature but I just wanted a second (or third) opinion. Is it okay to leave them in their nesting box or should I move them to a brooder? I'd hate to do that to mom but want whats best for the chickies. I ensured the other chickens wouldn't bother mom or the babies and put some starter food and electrolyte water in the nesting box. I have a large coop so I took out a wall inbetween two boxes so that mom had an area to nest and then there is room still for the water and food. I also hung up some towels and put extra cedar chips down. We have to go get more hay tomorrow. She's brooded and raised a set of chicks in spring but Im just worried it will be too cold for the chicks.
