I have a broody hen sitting on eggs right now. We only want one to hatch out though.

Is it safe for me to collect left over eggs from her nest and only leave her the same one everyday to sit on? Will this be ok for her and the chick?

Would it be better to gather a load of fake eggs to join the real one?

If you only want one egg to hatch I would at least leave her 2 or 3 because what if something
happens to the only one egg you let her sit on and it dies or something? Then you have nothing
and she has sat all this time for nothing.
It is fine to collect the extra eggs. Make sure and mark the eggs you want her to sit on so you
don't get them mixed up.
No need to mess with fake eggs.

Having one hatch is really not a good idea. You would have to keep the baby with the mam seperated until 8 weeks old and then you will need to reintroduce both to the flock. If you have two or more, you can put the mama back in the pen and the babes in a brooder.
