One of our barred rocks went broody 3 weeks ago so I let her sit on 1 and added 1 a day later as an experiment so see if I could hatch one the old fashioned way. Today when I went to let the others out I was greeted by a faint peeping sound under my broodie's butt. So far we've got one healthy, active peeping black and white mutt chick. It spends most of the time under mamma but occasionally pokes out for a nip of water or feed from the small dishes I stuck in there.

Good to know I can propagate my flock without any modern conveniences (or expenses).

Never did anything special, just let her sit.

Question... the nest box is a few feet above the ground and has a 3" lip that will contain the chicks for now. Do I need to add some height to keep them in or can they mingle with the flock and mama as they get bigger?
