Broody Hen Thread!

She prefers to come out and eat with the other 2
This is why I move my broodies, In the beginning I have had a broody to get off her nest---while she was eating, etc another hen got in her nest to lay a egg, then the broody got in a different nest and all her eggs got cold---none hatched. By moving them to a hatching pen---only one nest---only the broody----never had that problem again and have real good hatch rates.

I have moved her. But when I open her door to check on food and water she gets up and seems a bit stressed running up and down her run if I don't let her out for a few minutes. I've been shutting off the coop door for the few minutes she's out so she doesn't go back to the wrong place. And the other 2 haven't started laying yet so they aren't interested in her nest. I stay out with them doing a quick clean while she's out anyway so would see if there was a problem. She was out for less than 10 minutes today and now back on the nest and shut away from the others.

I have 6 nest boxes in my coop...they are built into the wall with hinged doors that open into the garage. I don't have to go into the coop to collect the eggs. I built a cage that attaches to the nest box (any of the 6 nest boxes) inside the garage...the cage is big enough for the hen to stretch her legs, eat and drink. When I get a broody I attach the cage to her nest box and block off the access to the coop...she is "with" the flock...they can hear her, but she doesn't have anyone trying to push into her nest. They seem to like it. When all the chicks hatch I move them into a chicken tractor, that I made just for hens with chicks...she and the babies go out on to grass. With a nice big nest box and run just for them. They can see and hear the flock...but till the time comes...they are safe. While Mom shows them how to be chickens.

I have a hen that just went broody, I didn't get her in the breaking box before my 6 year old granddaughter figured out she was broody, boy did I have one mad little girl on my hands when I told her it's to cold in Iowa to let her hatch chicks right now. She's giving me the stink eye as Im typing this.

Maybe if you explain that the mother hen wouldn't be able to keep her babies from freezing...no matter how hard she tried...it's tough to explain to a child of 6 that there are possible negative repercussions from doing things, just because you want something right now....at that age the concept of tomorrow can be difficult to comprehend...let alone weeks from now. They just don't get it yet. She may seem to understand....but just ask her how long she thinks it will be till she will be able to go swimming at the lake? Or something like that. There's a good chance she will be a bit confused as to how to answer....and if she has an answer, it won't be close to correct. It might help to get a calendar and pick a reasonable date for a broody to start a set and start a count down to the date. It will give her an idea of how long it will be and something to look forward to.

She's over the whole hen being broody for now. I was just surprised that she figured out the hen was broody all on her own.(only being 6)
She was in charge of the broody hens last summer. She's addicted to hatching chicks.

Oh I know all about chicken math. I really want to get an incubator, but I know what will happen if I do. LOL
It wasn't the incubator that did me in, it was the dang broody hens. That and my egg source. She has show quality stock, and she keeps sending me home with too many eggs. Hence, my 2nd coop for the English Orps I hatched, well my broodies hatched, last summer.

Whats wrong with "adding a few"? I built a bigger incubator 1 1/2 years ago----only hatched a little over 5600 in the next year or so----I do not see a problem!!! LOL
