Broody Hen Thread!

16 paws, that is so sweet of you. Thank you. If we were closer I would definitely adopt some of your Cochins. One of my first roosters that I ever had back when I was about 13 yrs old was a little Bantam Buff Cochin named Little Red. He was so funny, always following his little hen Maxine around. He would waddle up to me and peck my toes and scold me when I got too close to her and I would just pick him up, hold him at eye level, tell him to stop it and then put him back down. Such a funny little man. If only we could figure out how to make San Diego and La Plata closer together.....

Chickmeme where are you located? I'm sure somebody would snap up your Silkie roosters for you. Have you tried the classified thread on the forum to advertise them? Sounds like they are just good roosters if they are willing to brood chicks for your hens. I've heard of roosters sitting on eggs but never actually heard of them doing it till now. I've also heard of roosters helping to brood chicks for the hens, fluffing up wings and feathers so they can crawl in for a cuddle. Maybe your boys are trying to urge the hens to hatch some eggs for them. I know my roosters all went into the nesting boxes and made nests for the hens before they started laying. They were showing them where to lay eggs. Amazing stuff really when you think about it.

My BSL just hatched 7 of 10. RIR roo over 2 BSL, 1 dominique, & 1 cinnamon queen. Anxious to see how they turn out.

I've got this broody hen that's trying to hatch the feed barrel. She's a crested cream legbar crossed with either a black copper marans or australorp. She just has a fit when I have to take the lid off to get feed out. CRAZY BIRD!

Thank you katatonic and 16 paws. About a week and a half ago she actually balanced an egg on top of that barrel which is no easy feat, and I didn't think that much of it until she started sitting there and protecting her spot. I have another girl just like her that has gone broody several times in a nest box and she's just as weird, as soon as I walk into the coop she starts screeching and she sounds like some creature out of jurassic park.lol

My brother calls them feathered raptors. Watching him with his flock is like watching the trainer with the raptors on Jurassic World.

Yeah, the scary part is I remember reading on another forum that there are only two barnyard animals that will eat you if you die in their pen. One is a hog, the other is a chicken.

No wonder I call my chickens 'little ingrates' quite often. I have one rooster who has started a war of wills with me. I say he is going to move out of my way when I am in the coop area and he says he isn't going to do it and will instead attack my muck boots. Every time I catch him and carry him around being 'chastised' for being a bad boy and feel how heavy he is, how big his beak is and the size of his feet (he is a Lavender O with these huge really Jurassic feet and claws on him that are slate blue in color) I just know he would be the first one to take a big bite out of me if the opportunity presented itself.

I love the hen trying to hatch the food barrel. Guess she just wanted to be close to a gnosh when she wanted one.

Three weeks since Aggie hatched her chicks. She has returned to her chickhood behavior of sitting on top of her food or water container, which awarded her with her name of Aguilla. The Eagle. I just think she wants to get away from the kids for a moment now. The weather has been lousy here for the past few days meaning no outside and she is quite tired of being shut up with the little monsters .
