Yeah! We just checked. Seven out of 8 eggs have hatched. Proud momma is clucking away and trying to keep them all from peeking out. (21 days is not until tomorrow!)
Mine are due to hatch Monday, but it sounds like you all are saying i could happen any time now. Aughhhh! I'm not ready! Boil the water! Where's the midwife?
I have had 2 hens sharing a space that starting setting 4/30. That would make today the day and, sure enough, when I went out at 5:30 this morning, my brahma was clucking so I knew the time was coming.
Just went out again to find a little fuzzy baby standing between the two hens. Obviously belonging to the brahma, because the orp gave it a peck or two and sent it back to the other hen. I've never let my hens hatch eggs, so I'm new to this. I'm assuming (hoping) it's safe to leave the babies in the coop? That the others won't harm them? Even the orp sharing the enclosure; she's bigger than my brahma bantam. Just worried about the little guy, really don't want to pull him out if I don't have to. I have 2 brooder babies now that are almost 3 weeks and 28 eggs cooking. Oh, and I have one BO who is just clucking up a storm out in the run (that's how I knew about the baby) and then running in the coop and checking every space she can get to. I have to assume she hears the chick and is searching for it. I hope its not a "search & destroy" mission!
We'll see how many more I get. They have 6 split between them, but I never know who has what because every time 1 hen got up, the other would grab some eggs
so, who knows? Oh, and the hens are actually in a space that is enclosed with chicken wire with just a small opening. It was put in to separate juveniles when added to the flock, so hopefully, it will add some security for the babies.
