Broody Hen Thread!

I have a white silkie hen that just got done with her older chicks that she hatched a couple months ago and she started to lay eggs again and I left them there because I wanted to put some in the incuabtor but since she just got done with her chicks and stuff I don't want her to go broody again till next spring and with fall around the corner I don't want her to stay broody since they don't eat/drink as much....so I was wandering? I have 4 chicks 1 easter egg mix and 3 bantam mix the EE mix is about 3 days and the bantys are about a week and 3 days so I was wandering if I put the chicks under her this early if she would accepted them yet because she showed interest int he clutch yesterday but didn't sit long and now today she's been sitting since this morning so I was wandering if she would accept?....thanks!

she will proble defintly accept them but it will be difficult for the chicks to accept her at this stage they migth not follow her for a couple of days but they should after a while

When i have put chicks under a broody, I usually do it at night, so she wakes up in the morning with a pleasant surprise, the chicks will love being in the warmth, and surrogate mummy should easily accept them, I've just had a bantam who went broody and her hatch weren't fertile so I put a day old duckling under her at night and 3 weeks later, she's still caring for it....broodies are the best mums ever !!!!!

Ok thank you but actually the 3 bantam chicks that are a week old I got a couple days ago from the lady that was trying to downsize her flock and the 3 came from a broody bantam mommy so they should definatly be fine

well if they no the broody languge lol and that she isint going to attack them they should be just fine my silkie is currently sitting on 9 eggs she is just after raising another brood she hatched in spring aswell

Day 19. Tinsel the australorp is in a zen place in absolute lock down. Zinnia the ameraucana is an indifferent broody, who I will not allow to go again. She gets off the nest often enough that the eggs (half the number tinsel has because she threw them out of the nest) get cold. I just candled last week and all of tinsel's are dark with an air sack and zinnia's are totally clear. So maybe 11 from Tinsel, we shall see. 9 are rumpless araucana so we may lose some in shell.
