Broody Hen Thread!

Thank you Nicky!

Now can anyone help me with a dilemma... Her sister went broody a week ago. If I hear peeping from the second egg and put it under her to hatch within the next few days, can she accept it and stop being so broody after only a week?

Ok Lady of McCamley, I'm going to try!
Good luck...but if she is a good broody...she'll just think "Oh how wonderful...it came early."

I had a new broody quit on a batch of eggs (hopped the fence to get out of the broody hutch and run). I discovered her in the yard and ran to check the eggs which were cool to touch. I quickly got my Silkie who had just gone broody for about 3 days...I snatched up the Silkie from the main coop (who was hiding in a corner trying to brood) and plunked her down on the cooling eggs...they hatched in a week...she accepted them as if she had sat the whole 21 days and tended the chicks as if this were all normal.

They never seem to notice the time.

I sure hope so I can't go another 21 days with chickens in the furnace room! never getting any sleep before and after work chores you know. didn't really want more hens till next spring after I could build the second group. I'll keep everybody informed!
