Broody Hen Thread!

Also day 22 and although no pipping I did hear some chirping coming from one of the two eggs today. I know I should leave them alone but its soooo tempting to be nosey lol. I have heard that if eggs go cooler during the process it takes a little longer. I wonder if this is what happened as the eggs would have gone cooler between Margaret dying and Silky adopting the them. Hopefully this time tomorrow I'll be sharing pictures :D

I ordered some White Plymouth Rocks from Ideal. Some ended up looking like White Leghorns with floppy combs and lay white eggs... no biggie though, I liked them anyway. Well. about 10 or more of my 17 have gone broody at one time or another this spring. Not fake broody, hatch chicks and raise them broody. I have 22 chicks on the ground and about 30 more coming... they are baby raising machines! I was thinking I would be lucky if I got one... now I may be too lucky lol. If I leave an egg in there, someone is going to hatch it. My red broilers from Ideal, 3 I kept because I just had a feeling about them, lay like champs and hatch eggs like champs lol. I have one of two BR hens sitting as well and should have chicks in a week or so. Dont let anyone tell you hatchery chicks dont go broody! Holy goodness they do! A lot! Even the floppy comb "white Plymouth Rock" that lays the white egg is broody. Its nuts really. Just wanted to share. :) All of them are under a year old as well, got them around July or August of last year.

I have a broody silver polish. She is a year old, and I NEVER thought she would be the first to go broody! I finally gave her 3 turkey eggs because she seemed so determined. (our only rooster is a genetic mess, and I don't want any offspring from him!)

Fingers crossed for a successfull hatch!

I'll second this! I knew I wanted a broody to use once a year to replenish the flock. I had my existing flock of 16 mixed birds, mostly leghorns, born last August. I ordered more chickens (broody prone breeds) from Ideal in April. No sooner did those chicks turn 4 weeks and move outside and my EE (which I am assuming is a leghorn mix by her color and build) goes broody. I was not expecting that one!!

I FINALLY HAVE A BROODY!!! :weee

Know what it took? I hatched some eggs artificially, but from day 1 (day 2 for some) I put the chicks outside for the days. One of my hens seemed to take a particular interest in the youngsters, and yesterday she decided she was gonna start sitting on an empty nest, and sat there the whole night. She left for a few hours this morning, but after one of the other hens laid an egg, she resumed sitting. So, later this afternoon, I robbed the fresh egg and presented her with 9 out of the 'bator. She took them all and so far, so good! Mama to be is a french bcm :)
