Broody Hen Thread!

An Easter Egger is a mixed breed chicken that (generally) lays blue eggs. The bigger commercial hatcheries are selling Easter Eggers under the breed names of Araucana, Ameraucana and Americana (spelled with an "i"). Araucana and Ameraucana are breeds. There is no such breed as Americana (with an "i"). I thought she was a lavender, but wasn't sure if the lighting was off in the photo. I thought I saw the lacing a blue should have, even a pale blue. She doesn't have the crummy feathers that most lavenders have. She's really pretty. I wonder if she is an Ameraucana without the beard and muff genes. Why don't you post her picture on the Ameraucana thread. Tell you you were sold her as a lavender Ameraucan and see what they say. The president of the Ameraucana breed club will let you know. Did she ever have muffs and a beard that maybe the other chickens have plucks or have broken off? If she is a lavender, all the chicks will be black. Lavender is recessive, so they'll all carry it but not express it. What color are the soles of her feet? Pink/white or is she yellow skinnned? Here's a picture of one of my splash Ameraucana hens showing the muff and beard. Some don't have as full muff and beards as mine do. This hen is the biological mother of the chicks that I've hatched this past week that I've posted pictures of. A lavender Ameraucana hatched 7 of 7 and a Silkie just hatched the last chick.
She has never had tufts and her feathers have always been very smooth. Her little feet are blue/grey in color and the soles are pink. When the babies hatch in a few weeks I'll post some photos. Thank you :)

My hen went broody and hatched some eggs. I did add eggs under her. Fast toward 1 month and a half. now she is attacking her chick that is a rhode island. she had four brown leghorns and one rhode island. Why would she attack that one chick? They have started feathering out

The first impression she gave me was of an Ameraucana but she doesn't have the beard and muffs. Sometimes bearded and muffed birds appear clean faced because the face feathers are plucked by other birds (feed gets stuck in them) or they break. Some Ameraucanas have smaller birds and muffs than others. T

Does she have a pea comb?

Go to the BYC thread Ameraucanas and post good pictures of her. Take a good close-up picture of her comb, her face, her general outline and her legs. If you can get a picture of the soles of her feet it would be helpful.

I don't know anything about either Araucanas or Ameraucanas in the rest of the world. In the back of my mind, I think a breed of chicken that is identical to the US Ameraucana is called Araucana in the UK (Australia?). I'm not sure--I just have a feeling I remember reading something about it. Araucana and Ameraucanas are very young breeds. They were recognized into the American Poultry Association in the 70s or early 80s.

Do post her pictures to the BYC Ameraucana thread.

Make sure you tell them that you live in Australia and what she was sold to you as. The president of the Ameraucana Breeders Club is very active on the BYC Ameraucana thread. Lavender is not a recognized Ameraucana variety, but many are breeding and showing them. I don't want to deal with the horrible feather condition that goes with the color. Your bid looks to have fabulous plumage, which is why I just couldn't believe she was a Lavender. I look forward to seeing more pictures and hearing what the experts say.
