Broody Hen Thread!

I got a total of 4 to hatch in the incubator. The rest exploded or turned stinky.

One is black and one is blue. The two light ones are Silver chipmunk marked. All four have feathers sprouting on the wingtips so I may have all girls. We'll see when the tails come in. That is usually the big deciding factor.

So feathers sprouting on the wingtips of newly hatched chicks indicates they are females? Cool. I learn something new every day. That's why I love coming here.

We lock our hens up. Every evening they take themselves in to. The coop, however we noticed one was missing so we searched all over and nothing, we were worried as there has been possums hanging round lately so we do doing 2 hour possum searches lol, the next day about 12 she appeared from nowhere, so we decided to keep them in there coop for a day, I let them out yesterday and he never returned again so again I went looking finding her sitting on over 20 eggs....... My question is will the eggs still hatch I left her there and she is still there this morning

My muscovey duck hen was acting broody and I was gathering eggs for her and then she came out if her nest acting strangely.
:'( Terms out she was egg bound and then her vent prolapsed and she died while we were treating her.

I am so sorry for your loss. That is horrible.

I had 'rescued' what I thought was a geriatric muscovy from some mean little Amish boys at an auction last summer. I figured he would spend his last days in comfort and peace with freedom to free range at my place. However, he just kept getting sadder and sadder and would hardly move or leave the barn. Finally, I decided he needed a girlfriend. I went and picked up 2 females from another lady who were only a few months old and he took to them right away. He got very excited and the life went right back into him. He was eating better and getting around and I even saw him fly across the yard. Then fall came and he moulted and lo and behold he wasn't a grey colour after all, he was a beautiful white! Spring came and he started doing things I didn't think he was capable of!!! Sadly one day my female muscovy (his favourite) went missing. I figured a fox got her. It was a sad day. Then days later reappeared! Went missing and then reappeared. Finally I tracked down the nest of 12 eggs she hid right under my nose (beside my porch under some very thick vegetation). She sat faithfully for the duration and one bad day after work I noticed a chicken noticing that corner of the garden! there were 7 ducklings! The next morning she was parading them across the lawn, and there were 12!!! What little miracles!! For the first week she refused to go into the coop. I set up radios around the exterior of the house to ward off predators..and it was a week of terrible sleep. Finally, I convinced her to go in and stay in and now she treks them in every night faithfully. They are all back together as one big happy family. As of 6 months ago I had 15 chickens and 3 muscovy. Now I have 26 chickens and 15 muscovy!! They are 2 weeks old and adorable!!! Life is so precious! But muscovies are so numerous! my coop is getting a bit tight!!

Enjoy the pictures.
