Broody Hen Thread!

I DON'T WANT THEM TO BE BROODY! I have done everything I can to discourage and interrupt them being broody. If they would give up, I'd be over the moon. But as they will NOT STOP, I have to figure out how to accommodate chicks in my loft coop and it's stressing me out. Never again. They go broody again and they're either getting rehomed or I'm buying a wire cage.

Have you tried a broody breaker cage?

I swear broodiness is a communicable disease, lol. The wire cage works really well. I have broken 3 and am attempting to break another 4, while 6 are sitting on eggs (some fake) and three more are finally back to being normal and have abandoned their chicks as old enough to take care of themselves, so I totally feel your pain. The wire cages are kind of expensive at the pet store, you could try looking online and seeing if someone is getting rid of one for a decent price.

Garage sales! Keep a list of poultry needs and drop by when you pass one and see if they have anything. I have saved SO much money that way.

I'm Excited!!! It's about day 14.

A green egg I had put a ? on because all I saw this whole time was a large dark space. Figured since I didn't see blood rings and there was a good air cell I would wait and see. (And this is my first broody and first candling experience)

I saw a moving baby in there today! Whoo hoo!

I have my first broody sitting on an egg. She is due to hatch any day. Should I separate my other to chickens from her and would it be better to try to put them in the other coop with my 8-11 week old chicks or put her in a temporary cage?

No. I don't have one and then suddenly I had THREE broody birds and no way was I spending hundreds of dollars on multiple cages. It just seemed cheaper to let them sit and then slip them some cheap chicks from the feed store. But the whole thing is stressing me out and I'm tired of having no eggs! So next time, I'll be ready with a cage.
