Broody Hen Thread!

Hi everyone. So We have a hen named Soci and she is broody. So I Managed to finally move her and her eggs. She has been broody three times this year, but still no babies, she always got confused where her nest was. Anyways now I made a mock-nestbox and she really likes it. She is one of the most aggressive Brodie's we have ever had. Oh my goodness you should see how hard she pecks! Anyways it's about day 6 and she is doing great.

Here is her setup

As long as she can't get to another nest to sit on but still has food n water she should be fine. My last broody would bite me so hard I had a blood blister in the web of my hand.

Her setup is ina cage, so she cant move her nest. She has food and water, however she willnot eat or drink. Ever few days I give her a little nutri-drench to keep her going. She also gets some treats. I can tell her health is going down a bit, so Im making sure she gets a little something in her.

When they r sitting on the nest they will come out to eat n drink at odd intervals. Sometimes u won't even see them. They won't come out to defacate but maybe once or twice either but when they do, phwew!

Hubby and I just made it through a broody bonanza in our small urban flock. Seemed like once we got one sorted out, another would become Godzilla and chain herself to the next box. Since we do not have a rooster or wish to grow our flock at this time, I opted for the separation and cool it method to get the egg production back on track. We have a medium size dog kennel we use for sick or broody birds in the yard in the shade. In the morning this requires separate feeding and watering- a chore the hubby does in the wee hours of the morning. One morning, after a thread of expletives, spitting and sputtering, hubby described his broody hen feeding experience. It was similar to a Jurassic Park scene, which left him on his back kicking at the cage door and the angry hen making a run for it. Since then, he has taken to calling them tyrannosauruses and refuses to feed or water the broodies.

Lol! They can be little tyrants. Love my broody girls!

This is 6 year old Ginger who decided to go broody for the first time. She hatched out 4 babies unfortunately the first hatched was very weak, couldn't stand and didn't make it. I am a little concerned about the last baby who doesn't seem as vigerous as the others but am keeping my fingers crossed it perks up.

I know. My chickens are certainly my pets, or else when they decided lay only a couple eggs a day and eat the rest I would have gotten rid of them.

It's looking good ! One bantam is not viable but all others seem good! Except my Maran I can not see at all through the 3 I hAve!! This will be interesting. Hope I get at least one hen out of the three. On another note the three I just hatched 2/3 are pulleys yay! My cockerel is gorgeous!! I'll have fun doing some breeding experiments! Can't go wrong with a BR and blue laced isbar! My cockerel is a beautiful olive eg get with silver and white. First generation but has more of the cuckoo genes. Hair on legs and a beautiful yellow green legs. Plus he's so sweet!
I hope all your eggs hatch and you get some really healthy, cute chicks!

I'm sorry for your loss, I lost my red sex link, Maddie, Sunday. Not sure what happened but it broke my heart to pieces. I'm hoping some of the pullets at my friends are hers. I don't have as many pictures as I wish I did and she was only a year and a half old. :(
I had that happen last year. I went out to coop and everything was fine ! 30 min later I looked out the window to see my too just laying down. So I went out and he had just passed no marks nothing at all! We were baffled !sorry for your loss. I don't feel people really understand how much we care for our chickens. Not Intel they start raising them there selfs.
