Broody Hen Thread!

I agree a good momma will tend to their every need a lamp will not be needed, as far as coop space they will need access to food and water before 36 hrs make it available to her and the peeps make sure the water is in a very shallow pan or chick waterer as they will drown themselves if allowd any thing more than a inch deep after the fist week mom will have them out and about when she feels they need it keep a eye on the other the other girls in your coop to avoid any problems ,, congrats and enjoy they are fun to watch !!!

She is so pretty! I have 5 Black Australorps and 16 other hens of other breeds and at just 1 year old 2 of the BA's are already broody! So I definitely agree with the assessment. :)

I am looking closer at her and at the pictures online of Australorps now and wonder if she really is. Most of the pictures I have seen have single combs. My hen looks like she has a rose comb.....:idunno

We have a broody hen that is due to hatch tomorrow or the day after. This is her first time going broody and our first time with a broody hen! We had a little hiccup last weekend, we went off her nest to stretch her legs and when she came back someone else was in her nest, so our broody hen moved to the nest next to her. I waited until the hen who was in her original nest left and then moved the eggs under the broody hen in her new nest. I'm not sure how long the eggs were there without anyone sitting on them, hopefully not too long! They were still warm when I put them under her so we'll see if they end up hatching... it would break my heart if this clutch doesn't work out for her, she's been broody for 2 months now, I just want her to have some babies!

anyone else?
I think after the first one hatches (about 24-48 hrs) the mother hen gets off the nest to take her chicks for their fist walkybouts. So i think you may need to incubate the other ones that are due later? You might need a second oppinion as im just a beginner too but have read this is what mostly happens as she assumes theyre not fertile.
Good luck with your hatch! Mine is due 22nd!

what do u have hatching chookin ?

The husband told me no more chicks. . . . So I brought home 11 fertile eggs for my Broody Buff Orp! (he just laughed at me and said "Touche, I knew you would find a way") She took to them wonderfully and the count down has begun! The kids are making a calendar to keep track of the days! 20 more to go!

Thanks for the input! I was able to get a look under Chickadee about an hour ago, and she has two very active little chicks, plus six remaining eggs. I will leave the eggs alone and hope for the best. I put chick starter in the crate and she has been using a hamster bottle for water, so I lowered it to chick height; hopefully that will work fine. I will leave her in the crate for tonight and section off her end of the coop tomorrow so she can have more space then. She's in a dark corner; should I leave the light on just so she has some semblance of daylight?

Maybe I'm over thinking this...

Here she is with her two peeps, as she hastily tucked her remaining eggs back under her after I investigated:
