Broody Hen Thread!

im on day 20 and my silkie has got one baby yuppiiiee im not sure of the breed but its black day 20 is nearly over and that one hatched early in the morning its 7:37pm here in ireland that chick hatched at 10:30 will the others hatch has anybody ever had a big gap in there hatches all set the same time theres no pip in the others will they hatch tomoz
Yes...there can be a day gap even though they were all set at the same time. The hatching can take up to several days.(With bad eggs exploding, I wouldn't wait beyond day 22 unless you can see and hear pipping still.)

My Welsummer broody hatched one the middle of day 20...or rather I found it cheeping middle of day 20...but nothing else had any evidence....then 2 more on day 21...the other broody, the Silkie, (simultaneous hatch of same batch of eggs), hatched out 2 the next day as well.

It was a poor overall hatch...I think eggs were older than the feed store said, and weren't handled well before I got them...and the really warm weather had exploded a couple under the one hen...so I only got 5 out of 11. Not great hatch rate, but hey...they are great chicks...2 really neat EE's, a Barred Rock, Speckled Sussex, and a "yet to be determined" that has evidence of Blue Duck Wing or Blue Laced Red Wyandotte.

Best wished for the morrow

I've been told to throw them out at day 22 and as a result, I would've (note, would have) killed a chick. Out of like 8 eggs, 1 hatched on day 25. Hatching on day 23-24 is also common. So throwing out at day 22 can result in dead chicks that would've otherwise lived(and no, I didn't hear cheeping or rolling)

thanks everbody but i checked again today and candeled them but i can see chicks in some but no internal pip the chick that hatched yesterday is triving an a fluffed up with mom i hope atleast one more hatches

So my broody leghorn hatched four out of seven babies yesterday, day 20. Today, the remaining three eggs remain the same, not a pip on any of them. I'm not the best at candling, but I'd say one is definitely not going to hatch (too much light coming through I think) but the other two are still questionable. Very dark and good air cells, but no movement or chirping that I can see or hear. How long would you give these remaining eggs before tossing them? Is it common for eggs to hatch days apart like this? So happy to have the four regardless. She is doing great with them. Really quite something to witness. :)
