Broody Hen Thread!

One of my white silkie hens that was born this past spring is of course not a year old yet and she went broody yesterday and its November and snowy and cold here in Ohio but I'm sure she will do good with them
I had the same situation but 3 weeks ago and in CT it's been getting pretty cold. It's her first broody so I'm happy that 4 out of 7 eggs hatched. The probs was that there was one that started to hatch but the mom abandoned it for the chicks and it died. Fortunately I checked the two other eggs and they had some form of chick in it so ik that all of my eggs are fertilized. So happy!!!

I don't have the space in my house for a brooder and chicks but I have plenty of space outside so whenever a hen goes broody I use it to my advantage and put at least 5-9 eggs under them. I've had 3 broodies and they hatched out 9 chicks in total. Can't wait until the spring/summer because I'm hoping I get at least 4-5 broodies which is very likely because I have 13 silkie hens!!!

That's great so how is she and the chicks the only thing I'm worried about is the chicks warmth and survival

Forgot to mention that we brought them in the garage where's it's in the 50's but not freezing. They are the craziest chicks every. Overall they are good healthy chicks. Btw 3 of them are mille de fluer/silkie cross and one of them is a pure silkie.

This is a pen I made out of a swing set frame and works well and a small coop/box at the end I took these pictures today
This is a picture of the side of the box
This a picture when you lift up the hinged lid and look down in it
The other 2 chickens in here with the broody is another white silkie hen and a buff silkie rooster....but I can't take them inside the garage or house

I like the coop and I would keep them in the coop until the eggs hatch and then bring them inside. Also put tarps around the run so that snow can't get in if u do decide to keep them outside. I'm going to keep mine inside until they are fully feathered.

Anybody. How do you feed chicks when the py are with the momma in the coop with the other chickens. Do you put the feeders and waterers on the ground or do you give them a Seperate redder and waterer on the ground. Idk how I should incorporate there feed into the coop?

Yep I had the idea of the tarp thing yesterday thanks for telling me anyway cause then the chicks feet wont be in the snow
