Broody Hen Thread!

When I was cleaning my coops out today I opened up one and found a hen inside, I assumed she was laying but as I put fresh sawdust down she was picking it up and putting it on her own back! This hen has tried brooding twice before but never sat for more than 2 weeks - does she not know that its December?

Elliechook, I don't think any of them know it's December! I have one brooding over two eggs right now. funny about throwing the hay or saw dust on her back I was amazed to see my hen doing that too.
 
I have a cubalaya hen with three chicks, only 3 weeks old. Today I found where she has laid 2 eggs in her brood box!!. She is a pullet and was really restless in the evenings. I have been letting her out for 10-15 minutes. She poops then runs around teasing roosters and getting bred. Then she comes back to her door to be let in with her chicks... and now EGGS! Is she trying to go serial broody on me? Should I let her leave the chicks? She has them under her with the eggs at night.

I'm nervous about forcing her to keep the chicks, that can go south fast.

I would take the eggs away so that she puts all of her attention in the chicks instead of the eggs.
 
Hens will look after the chicks til they are about 5 weeks old i read somewhere on here. i'd take the eggs away too. can't be healthy for her to continue the brood. She may just be accepting the eggs b/c she is still brooding her chicks. Is she on Layer pellet or Chick feed? She shouldn't have the calcium in her to produce eggs....

I'll go out and grab the eggs right now. But from all the other broodies we've had, once the hen is back laying she generally loses interest pretty fast.
