Broody Hen Thread!

The thing bout chickens is that they can't read... so they don't know they aren't supposed to be broody types, or are supposed to be.... so in general, you have a bit better chances with some breeds, but there are no set in stone rules that the breeds follow. Even if you have a bird of a breed which is known to be broody, it may not be, and vise versa. 'Easter eggers' are basically mutts (having been bred from a mix of breeds with the intent to develop egg colors) so EEs may have a lot of broody stock in their background or very little, depending on the breeds used in the hatchery's mix.

A few I know of which seem to be represented here quite often are silkie, cochin (especially Banty ones) and Old English Game fowl hens, Black Australorp have been a common hen on this thread also. Good luck with your birds, hopefully you will get a few broodies of your own.
Yeah I know that EEs are mutts. Yeah as I said I was going to get silkies but I didn't. Okay thanks!

Worked late last night and came home to no chicks. Starting day 22 with 4 eggs still under her.I guess if they don't hatch by morning I will pull them on day 23. Poor lil girl worked hard too!

Unless they are cracked and oozing or smelling bad, I'd give it a couple more days...she was on and off so there may simply be delayed development. Sometimes it can take up to day 25 or so unless the eggs are obviously bad.

Do you hear any peeping???? (I stand by and just listen for 5 minutes or so to see if I hear faint peeping).

Well, I got one chick so far! I see my Black Australorp roo traits, but it will be fun to try to pick out which hen this one is from as it grows. I had one Americauna egg still under her, hope that one hatched, I love their egg colors and their feather patterns. Glad lil Skipper will have at least one chick from all her hard work!

I'll update as more hatch

glebreton, confratulation!
I don't post much, but I do pay attention. I'm hoping to gain knowledge from you guys' experience!
I'm doing a happy dance for you, and hoping more hatch!

Thanks RTF...Still only one chick this morning and 3 eggs still under my lil girl. Guess I'll let them set a couple days to be sure they are duds. I did find the egg shell and it was my Americauna egg that hatched. I am excited to see this chick develop and lay if its a hen

On another note, I went out this morning to feed and found my cockerel dead. He was 5 months old and starting to look really pretty. Don't know why he died. He and my Australorp roo have never challenged each other, never even seen them bow up to each other. He was submissive to my older roo. No injuries seen on him at all and he was walking around fine yesterday. No idea why he died....

Congratulations on your little chick!

I'm so sorry to hear about your roo dying.
