Broody Hen Thread!

I gave my broody 4 eggs to hatch from an incubator. She had them for 3 days and last nite I found 1 baby under her. The others should be along in the next day or two!

And here I thought you weren't going to hatch anymore any time soon....chicken math setting in again?

Well my easter egger broody hen has adopted our batch of 9 week old Cornish cross...cute but A. They don't need help finding food lol and B. What happens when we process the Cornish?!

she's gonna freak out...

LOL...good for her....even dinner needs some mothering.

I think she will get the idea before you process them as they get very large, and very heavy, very fast...and will soon outgrow her.

Enabler Alert: If she's frustrated...find some more chicks!

Spring is springing around here...the sun in shinning (yes, a big deal around here)...my daffodils are blooming...and I found my seasonal broody sitting in the nest, lingering...and my heart lept in hope...but she is out again...not ready yet.

Drat...I'm ready to hatch some more chicks...my Buckeye breeder is on hold for 6 eggs...the BCM's are 9 weeks now...practically grown!

Ah well...my Silkie is starting to let me pet her and squatting a little...she should be ready to brood again soon...

I think tomorrow morning I will have chicks..... My Luna didn't get up today to eat and was acting funny in her bucket....Can't wait!!!

They give you that "look" and I am lost. The good news is I'm only at 8...... But Harmony has 2 more eggs and Bo is giving me that "we gotta get a rooster" look.

5 out of 6 of my pure silkies eggs have hatched under mum and are all fluffy, both hers and my first hatch, she's a great so far! One still hasn't pipped but it may be one of the ones she stole two days after the others started before I got a chance to mark them so I'm eagerly awaiting it! 3 are yellow and two are a yellowy grey colour so I don't know what colour they'll turn out to be?? Any idea?? I'll get some photos soon though both parents are white pure silkies but I don't know what colour the grandparents were, although I know they were pure silkies too. Ones also got pink legs but I've read that'll darken in time. Photos soon!!

My most broody BO disappeared two days ago after getting agitated with me reaching my hand under her for eggs....no predators seen, everyone else is fine. I'm thinking chicks in about 3 weeks.

So here's some photos of my day old's! They're not great because i didn't want to disturb mum and babies too much but you should be able to get an idea of the colour. I know the little yellow ones will turn out white but what colour will this darker one turn out, splash? Two out of the 5 are this colour while the others are yellow. Like i said both mum and dad are pure white silkies, grandparents were pure silkies but i dont know what colour. Thanks!
