Nessie's chicks are a week old today. You can see where the snake bit her on the head while she was defending them. the feathers have fallen out around the bite.

She's a great momma!

I'm back

I have 3 full brood's right now. I'm not sure what is going on but my OEG as most of you know just finished raising her chicks maybe 6weeks ago tops has 12 under her. She had started stealing my Australorps eggs when she went broody last Monday . So I let her sit for a 2 days knowing she would go broody cause this is her 3 rd try ( 1st to young) then my favorite mille Fluer D'uccle went broody in another coop so I caved with her after her tantrums And screaming cackling !! My baby is mean right now! By far a tuff little momma !! She even bit me which she likes to do for treats normally but not now... So that being said I have 31 eggs under 3 broods and my poor husband has to build me another broody coop the poor man

. I'm heating up the incubator for mille because I cracked 5 eggs I had saved for incubator 5 th was fertile. I stuck the rest under her in hopes1-2 are at least fertile. If not I guess I'll be sneaking standard EE chicks under her. I feel like broody dust got spread over my flock .

My first time with a broody! My SFH has been sitting faithfully and babies are hatching a day or 2 early!

I was surprised to see one this morning when i went to give her food, and every time I go out there, there seems to be a new baby! 5 babies from what I can tell so far! 4 yellow ones and 1 black one. So exciting and so surprised. Unfortunately for me, they're all hiding behind mama, so I can only take pictures through the tiny holes of the wire mesh.

Yep, they usually stay a day after, and it is both to allow late eggs to hatch and also to give the little ones time to gain strength before venturing out into the big, wide world.... hens appear to understand that the chicks have a built in 3 day window and the longer they wait the stronger the chicks are.

its amazing how they know - but my hen daffodil went broody and had about 15 guinea fowl eggs under her but we took 6 while she was getting food and put them in the incubator, they were falling out of the nest, also she is 5 days today

then again its winter but no one plz dont inform me that they might not hatch coz ive already done the research lol
