Broody Hen Thread!

I am lousy at candling :( Ive watched videos and looked at photos, I cant figure out what Im looking at. Any idea what to do? My silkie has been sitting on 5 eggs for 8 days. Im using "barnyard" eggs, and I do have an active roo but there is a chance the eggs arent fertilized.

wow! thats great - how long has she been broody, how many eggs were under her? my hen lets me pick her up and she still goes back on them lol Good Luck:jumpy

Thanks! Today was day 20 of her sitting on eggs. I put 7 under her, but 3 days ago, when she left the nest, I though I counted 8! So, she either stole one or one of the hens snuck into her broody pen and laid one in there. Either way, I'm guessing #8 won't hatch due to the timing. She didn't like me poking at her all day today to look at chicks, but she tolerated it. I managed to hold 2, but I put them back after only 2 minutes because she was getting anxious.

This was our situation too. We have a roo with 26 girls. Two of the original 11 eggs in my broody's clutch hatched. Granted, a snake ended up taking 4 of them, so it was two out of seven that actually hatched. None of the others were fertilized. I've figured out that both of the eggs that hatched were laid by one of my Silver Laced Wyandottes.

We never candled at all because I didn't want to stress out the broody, but I wish I had because of the lack of growth in most of the eggs.

1st time broody has 1 little black chick tonight. She was determined. She pooped on the eggs a week ago and I left them alone, not wanting to spread bacteria by wiping them. We will see how she does. Swapped out the food to chick starter and put rocks in the water so there are no accidental mishaps.

its amazing how they know - but my hen daffodil went broody and had about 15 guinea fowl eggs under her but we took 6 while she was getting food and put them in the incubator, they were falling out of the nest, also she is 5 days today:fl then again its winter but no one plz dont inform me that they might not hatch coz ive already done the research lol

Nature is amazing I had 10 cold for 14 hours and I got them warm again waited and they all were alive still. They all hatched yesterday . I had to help one who broke through the side of egg but couldn't do anymore. She's now recovered
