Broody Hen Thread!

Chick #1 has still not hatched completely! Almost there. Have 3 more that have pipped and 1 that was noisy with no pip yet. No noticeable action from the other 3. Obviously I am not much of a hands off hatcher but so far so good ;) I am so excited. Chick #1 looks to be yellow, obviously I cannot see her entirely yet and she is wet but I am surprised. Her mom is my black/orange easter egger who was a pretty dark chick...so baby may take after buff orpington dad, legs and beak are also light colored, unless green develops with time in the legs, I thought it was there from the start with my ee's.

Congratulations on your new chick! I hatched some easter egger / buff orp crosses last year. BO rooster over several colors of EE hens. The offspring were all buff with white legs. Some have black or blue in the tails. All of mine ended up having pea combs and laying colored eggs. Most of them lay green eggs and one lays a blue egg. They have been ridiculously broody and all of them are currently raising chicks.

I put 4 of Rosa & Howard's pretty blue eggs under a broody R.I.R. today. Can I add 2 more 2 days from now?

Not unless you want a staggered hatch! My broody had mixed up eggs and she got off the nest before the last one hatched and i had to finish it off in my bra lol. I kept it there for another 2 and 1/2 days till it hatched yesterday and last night i stuck it back in with the rest. It's doing great now. But it would have been a dead chick if i hadn't saved it.

Hello world! Baby easter egger/orpington #1 has arrived. She does have a little black spot on the top of her head but otherwise looks like an orpington chick. All the other pipped eggs still just have pips, no zipping yet, hopefully soon but I can hear them so they seem fine

4, almost 5 hatched with a 6th pipped! My kids and the other chicks were being pretty loud in the coop so I couldn't tell if I could hear the last two eggs peeping or not. 6 of 8 seems pretty good though!

5 hatched and a 6th working on it, still nothing from the other 2
So far 2 easter egger/orpingtons, both yellow, 2 fuzzy legged cochin/orpingtons, 1 maran/orpington. If I am understanding correctly the cuckoo maran (hen)/buff orpington (roo) is a sex linked chick?

Hi all!

I have some questions about my broody, and it was suggested I could try posting here so I am going to copy and paste. I am new to hatching or letting a broody hatch.

She was setting on 5 eggs, from 5 different hens and 2 fake eggs. She kicked a fake egg out early on, and just now I went in the coop and there was a broken egg she had moved out from under her and they are definitely fertile because there was a baby chick very well formed inside. Should I worry about the remaining eggs? It seems like she is not being terribly gentle if she has already broken one and kicked one out. They *should* hatch on Sunday, I believe. Also, is it a bad idea to leave a fake egg under her? There is one still there.
