Broody Hen Thread!

I'd take the fake egg out personally. I don't know much as this is my first broody but I was told they know if something is wrong with an egg, maybe she mixed the one up with the fake egg trying to get it out?

So I candled the 2 with no pips so far. My only purebred orpington is alive! I saw movement and heard it chirping so hopefully a pip will come today yet. The other egg (a 3rd easter egger egg) I am thinking may have been snuck under my hen a few days after she went broody. It looks good as far as I can tell but the air sack is smaller?

Hi all!

I have some questions about my broody, and it was suggested I could try posting here so I am going to copy and paste. I am new to hatching or letting a broody hatch.

She was setting on 5 eggs, from 5 different hens and 2 fake eggs. She kicked a fake egg out early on, and just now I went in the coop and there was a broken egg she had moved out from under her and they are definitely fertile because there was a baby chick very well formed inside. Should I worry about the remaining eggs? It seems like she is not being terribly gentle if she has already broken one and kicked one out. They *should* hatch on Sunday, I believe. Also, is it a bad idea to leave a fake egg under her? There is one still there.
I would take the fake egg out. She doesnt need it. I wouldnt worry about the rest of the eggs. I have had broodys throw eggs out many times. I tend to think there may of been something wrong with the chick. I trust the broody. On the other hand IF I had a bator I would be tempted to put it in there and see what would of happened. I dont have one so there you go.
Relax and enjoy the exciting things coming.....

Chick #7 (my orpington) has pipped! Chick #6 is slowly making it's way and the other 5 are doing well, fluffed out and starting to peek out from under mama. I am tempted to get the incubator ready for egg #8, I can't imagine she will sit much longer than another day and I just don't think that one will hatch today...I could be (and hope I am) wrong

#6 is out...a boy :( his egg donor (lol) is a cuckoo maran and his daddy my orpington so white dot on head = boy

I have one Dominique broody that this is her 2nd time within 2 months her first brood didn't make it because I tried to relocate her too many times. She became brood the second time 2-3 days after my Sussex went broody now my Chantecler has gone broody. We have about 12 days left before some chicks hatch!
I haven't moved any one them this time but they keep changing nests, will this be a problem? Once I finish off my second coop I will them in there to finish the brooding and hatching.

The past hour it's been breaking through the shell really fast. It zipped all the way round then i took it out my bra for the final push and it hatched on a towel in my lap. I'm sitting here with it wrapped up, it's tweeting away and trying to get up. Looks strong and healthy. And it's got pretty markings like the other 2 which are from my Italian crosses. I knew it was worth saving. Now just hope it's a girl! lol Maybe if it's male we can keep it anyway, our rooster just now is pure evil! lol So i wouldn't mind replacing him.....

That is so cool!!!!!!!! Can't wait to hear what you name her (hopefully her).

Congratulations
