Broody Hen Thread!

Goldie is broody for the first time. Here she is....Sitting on imaginary eggs....What a talker!

My husband believes she not really broody....she just won't come out because she HATES her hairdo . I keep her topknot trimmed because she free-ranges during the day with her sisters and our roo Drumstick. Safer to see!

Hi my silkie just got broody for the 2 time. it's sooo exciting! she's 2 days in. i have
netted her in and once or twice a day i get her off.

This is Winnie my Blue laced red Wyandotte and the 4 chicks she hatched out this week. Two of the chicks are French Black Copper Marans and 2 are mixed EE x FBCM. The EE eggs were blue eggs so I'm hoping for some more green egg layers.

hello,
I have three real broody hens and this is their first time being broody, and my first time having chickens...
we have a rooster but we don't want any chicks at the moment, and we collect the eggs all the time through out the day...
is it okay to just let them be broody? or should I keep taking them out? just don't know if their eating and drinking enough being in the nesting box all day...

It's hard on their bodies to be broody, so I'd attempt to break them. You can put them in a crate or rabbit cage about a foot off the ground without any bedding for a couple days and see if that helps. We usually separate them and it only takes 3 days to break them.

Awesome picture!!! Those chicks are so cute!!!

I risked life and limb to get this shot earlier. She has 11 chicks total. 2 Cochins and 9 Faverolles. I aslo have one trying to go broody. If she is still setting on Fri. she will get however many faverolle eggs I can collect out of 2 girls and 12 BCM eggs that I am getting.

Great picture !! Hoping to get setup for more girls and a roo next spring :) One of my Buff's was broody and we just kept taking her off of the empty nest..took quite a few times to finally get her out of it..very stubborn Gah!

Okay then I will get to the job of breaking them ASAP!!!

So if they become broody they stay broody? I've also noticed that they don't eat or drink very much while their broody...is this true?

Hello everyone,
I have a question and would really appreciate any advice. My silkie momma was on 8 eggs for 23 days I started to lose hope that any were going to hatch. But two nights ago I went and checked on her and we had one little peep and then yesterday another little peep!! They are both healthy and seem to be doing great. The momma was up with the babies for about 5 min this morning but hurried back to the eggs. My question is how long should I leave her with the eggs? It's been very chilly here which I think slowed down the hatch time some.

I've been candling all the eggs and they were all growing great!!! Thanks for the help:)
