broody hen

Depends on the "spread" factor of the hen and how cold it is and how careful the hen is with the eggs (does she tend to let them roll to the fringes).

Generally I do best with 4 in winter/cold weather and about 5 to at most 6 in summer/warm weather.

You can help the hen by placing good nesting material in a little box, like pine shavings or timothy hay (the kind you buy at small pet stores).

My banty Cochins have been great mothers for me and responsible for raising most of my current flock.

Good luck. Keep us posted.
