Hi everyone. I am a novice hen keeper. My sister in law bought me a small coop and some chickens for a Christmas gift and I have to admit to becoming totally besotted with these beautiful girls. I have three.Yesterday my Orpington White, Sybil, decided to sit on two eggs for most of the day. She is still there this morning, and pecks me if I go near her. From reading a previous thread I understand that she may be broody, and I was wondering if it would be a terrible thing to just remove the eggs? The coop is far too small just to leave her sitting in poop. I've been reading about broody boxes but have no idea where to find one. Your answers would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Actually a broody breaker box can be a wire crate(with wire floor) like they sell for dogs, etc. you put something under it to elevate (bricks, whatever). The idea is to have the broody with NO bedding for her to make a new nest. Floor of crate off ground so cooler air flows under her.. For some reason that is enough to "break" most broodies. Some need a couple days in the box, stubborn broodies may need a few attempts.

! Happy you joined us! Drumstick is right...your bird needs to be "broken" of her broodiness. I have two Buff Orps that go broody a couple times a year - removing the eggs does nothing - they continue to just sit. Good luck to you!

Welcome from east central Indiana! What a great sister and fabulous Christmas gift! Lucky you. I may be having the same problem in the next month or two. I have 8 Buff Orpington pullets that aren't far from laying. Should be interesting. lol

Thanks for the warm welcome. :-). I'll give it a go.
