Broody hens?

If you follow this link it talks about how to tell if an egg is fertile and has photos. If you crack some eggs and most are fertile. most you don't crack will be fertile too.

If you decide to give one or both eggs, you have some options. Many people isolate a broody hen form the flock while they incubate eggs. I don't but there is nothing wrong with that. I'll let others talk about that if they want to.

Whether you decide to let a broody incubate the eggs with the flock or isolate her, you need to collect all the eggs you want her to hatch and start them under her at the same time. That's important for different reasons. You want them all to hatch at the same time, not spread out.

I collect all the eggs I want her to hatch and mark them, using a black Sharpie. It's not that unusual for another egg to show up under a broody hen. Another hen may lay a fresh egg in her nest or the broody may carry an egg back to her nest. So every day after they have all laid I check under a broody and remove any unmarked eggs. If you remove them every day they are still good to use.

When the eggs hatch I let the broody hen take care of raising them with the flock. Some people like to isolate the hen and chicks form the flock. Again, just different ways to do it.

Thank you!!! And thanks for the info!! I will definitely check out the link.

If you do put eggs under them and yiur other hens have access to your broodies nests, I would suggest taking a Sharpie, nail polish, or something else that won’t rub off, and making a circle around each egg. That way you can quickly lift each hen up once a day and remove any unmarked eggs to prevent a staggered hatch. (Chicks developing at different times.)
