Has anyone ever had a broody RIR or a Barred Rock? I know RIR are bred for egg laying and that trait was bred out of them, but I was just wondering.........

I don't think so. I have over 15 RIR hens and not a single one has any interest in laying on the eggs. Good thing for banty hens though. They always end up hatching RIR chicks.

We have a broody RIR. It's our first one. We haven't had any hens lay on their eggs before. She hatched 2 chicks and she is still laying on about 6 eggs.

I have 7 RIRs and they have no interest in starting a family. Mine even will kick the roos butts we they start trying to show off and intice them. I guess they are conservatives of the poultry world.
