Broody in Feb!!!??

Here is a pic of my broody. I expect them to hatch around the 10th. Daddy is a welsummer.

We're going to have a bunch of new babies in the next few weeks. Hillbilly Hen, have you hatched this early before?

No I have never hatched in the winter before. This is my first hatch in over 8 years. The only other time I had a broody was when my son's showmanship chicken, a black Japanese hatched out 10 chicks. Only one was a male. We did not separate them from the rest of the flock and they did fine. I am just going to let nature take it's course with this one too. She only has three eggs. One EE and the other two are either Isa browns, BR ar RIR.

We are geting snow to night and tommorow i think. I hate snow right now. lol I put down new bedding in the coop today! The chickens were so happy to have good smelling bedding! lol They seemed much happer! lol Pearl is going to realy have to go potty tomorrow, she did not go potty today. Is it ok if i take her off her nest so she will go potty?

I cleaned out behind my broody 2 days ago. She just went outside the edge of her cardboard box. She hadn't moved, yet the eggs were clean. (had to lift her off today to clip ziptie leg band) Yesterday and today were much warmer. 42* in the barn. She got off the nest last night and did her "duty" off to the side. I wouldn't take her off. She'll do what she needs to do. You may have to clean up behind her every once in awhile though.

Day 3!!! She is sitting, and sitting, and sitting! lol. She has not gone potty in 3 days!!!!!!! its snowing veary bad out side!

So how are your broodies doing?!

OH, woe is us chicken addicts. I let my broody sit on ceramic eggs for 5 or 6 days and then brought her into the basement in a tote on those eggs. A couple hours later, sneak out eggs, replace with newly hatched but dry chicks and two ready to hatch eggs. So far so good, but she MUST go potty soon, urgh. So, one broody, good-natured hen with her newly hatched chicks, and she is so darn lucky. Warm basement and had to set less than a week. She will be so surprised when she has to do it for three weeks huh? But, she is my most prized hen, can't let her suffer. I must buy her a diaper is all I can think. Mess in basement, or heat a 24x 12 two story hen house? OH, mess wins. The hen house stays about 30 degrees or warmer with it's heat lamp, but not warm enough for those chicks me thinks. I am ready for spring.

Belle is doing great. I put a little winter squash from dinner in her nest and she ate quite greedily. One more week.
